Text Box: One of the challenges of marketing is that each of us has a personal feeling about what we think WE like and respond to when it comes to messages from those around us. But an old saying comes into play:  “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing”.  That’s one reason I call strictly intuitive marketing “The Fatal Conceit”.  (Because it often is FATAL) It’s a term borrowed from an author who analyzed the  rise and fall of societies and economies planned and controlled by a single all-powerful leader or party. History reminds us how unproductive and miserable that approach has proved to be in the past. 

Yet, often owners and managers do the same thing with their own marketing...presuming their perception alone is enough to make it all work. Then they sometimes make impulsive or “intuitive” decisions driven by ego. When their businesses or organizations fail to rise much above mediocrity, under-perform, or even worse, crash on the rocks of competitive enterprise, they are puzzled. 

Some people are truly gifted at intuitive marketing. You may be one of them. If that’s the case, congratulations. But even they limit their audience and their success to the smaller universe of their own perception.  Perceptive experience in your industry or niche can be a great advantage, giving you knowledge of your customers and markets on one hand...and a great handicap...limiting your ability to think outside your own experience on the other. You could be passing up one customer segment, for example, that would double or triple profits.
